The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was established after a decision to this effect was taken at the Stockholm Convention in 1967. WIPO actually came into existence in 1974.

Objectives

WIPO was set up to 'promote the protection of intellectual property universally and to ensure administrative co-operation and co-ordination among the intellectual property unions'.

Organs

WIPO has three organs:

  • General Assembly: Meets every three years, became a specialized agency of the United Nations Organization.
  • Conference in which WIPO members who are not members of any Unions may also participate.
  • Coordinating Committee comprising of members of Paris and/or Berne Union Executive Committees.
